Part 2 will discuss Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 EV charging stations.

Level 1

A Level 1 charging station uses a common 120-volt connection with a standard household electrical outlet. Since they typically come with a plug-in vehicle, there typically won’t be an additional costs. However, charging is long and slow. Most owners of electric vehicles with a depleted battery will require 12-13 hours of overnight charging using a Level 1 charging station.

Level 2

Level 2 requires a higher output 240V power source, which is identical to what dryers and ovens use. It delivers charging times far faster than a Level 1 charging station. As an example, the Mercedes B Class 250e requires 20 hours for a full charge for a range of about 85 miles with a Level 1 120-volt charging station. In stark contrast, a 240-volt Level 2 charger will take just three hours.

It will also be much more convenient charging at your home. Level 1 will not be adequate for commuters who drive long daily commutes because they will not be able to recharge during their work hours. Upgrading to a Level 2 EV charger will become  necessary if they have a fully electric car and there are no public charging stations near their workplace.

A big plus for installing a Level 2 EV charger is that it increases the resale value of your home. The State of Georgia also offers a $250 tax rebate for an installation.

Level 3

Extremely fast, Level 3 EV chargers use very high voltage, and are capable of adding up to 90 miles of range in just 30 minutes for some electric vehicles. Unfortunately, installing a Level 3 ESVE station is very expensive, costing tens of thousands of dollars. In addition, the regular use of Level 3 chargers can gradually harm a vehicle’s battery, so this type is not recommended for home usage.
